UNIVERSITY OF PERADENIYA
The University of Peradeniya is the oldest university in Sri Lanka, funded by the University Grants Commission.
It was established in 1942 and was named the Ceylon University.
According to the classification of higher education institutions in Sri Lanka, this university holds the second position in the country as of 2024, and ranks between 1001-1200 in the world's best university rankings.
The University of Peradeniya consists of 9 faculties, 4 postgraduate institutions (including the newly added postgraduate institute of medicine), 20 centers and units, and 73 departments.
It has approximately 12,000 students engaged in studies and research in fields such as medicine, agricultural sciences, science, arts, engineering, dentistry, veterinary medicine, animal sciences, and public health.
The University of Peradeniya spans across 700 hectares (1,700 acres) in the Mahaweli Valley.
A significant portion of this area remains undeveloped.
The university is located in a temperate zone where the average temperature ranges between 18-30 °C.
The Faculty of Agriculture has a separate sub-campus established in the Mahailuppallama area of the Central Province since 1968.
The main entrance to the university is through the Galaha Road. The Faculty of Engineering is located on one side of the Mahaweli River, while all other faculties are situated on the opposite side of the river.
The Akbar Bridge connects these faculties together.The only train station belonging to the university, 'Sarasavi Uyana' railway station, is situated within the Peradeniya University.
'Yaka Bridge', which falls through the railway line, is another bridge within the university. Daily shuttle bus services operate from Kandy to Galaha Junction and from Kandy to the university.
