SRI LANKAN
Sri Lanka was referred to as Ceylon during British rule and is currently officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is also known by names such as Serendib, Ceylon, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, the Land of Dharma, and the Jewel of the Indian Ocean.
This island, referred to by various names in ancient times, was popularly known as 'the island with a thousand names'.
It is a South Asian island situated in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bengal Bay, and southeast of the Arabian Sea; it is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Mannar Bay and Palk Strait.
Due to its location on major sea routes, Sri Lanka has served as a strategic maritime link between Western Asia and Eastern Asia since ancient times.
The Government of India and the Government of Sri Lanka signed an agreement on March 23, 1976, establishing maritime boundaries in the Mannar Bay and the Bengal Bay.
India and the Maldives can be referred to as neighboring countries to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is a very beautiful island with eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, sandy beaches stretched across the coastline, rainforests, and lush tea plantations in the hills.
The natural beauty of the pristine rainforests, beaches, and landscapes, along with its biodiversity and rich cultural heritage, has made it a globally recognized tourist destination.
Sri Lanka, a multi-religious and multi-ethnic state, is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages.
In addition to the majority Sinhala people, other minority ethnic groups living there include Sri Lankan Tamils, Indian Tamils, Moor, Burgher, Malay, and indigenous Vedda people.
The official languages are Sinhala and Tamil.
