The University of Peradeniya is the oldest university in Sri Lanka funded by the University Grants Commission. It was established in 1942 and was named the University of Ceylon. According to the classification of higher education institutions in Sri Lanka, this university is ranked second in the country in 2024 and is placed between 1001-1200 according to global university rankings.The number of faculties at the university is nine.1. Faculty of Agriculture8. Faculty of Allied Health Sciences9. Faculty of ManagementThe University of Peradeniya is spread over 700 hectares (1,700 acres) in the Mahaweli River floodplain. A significant portion of it is still being developed. The university is located in a temperate zone with an average temperature ranging from 18 to 30 °C. The Faculty of Agriculture has a separate sub-campus established since 1968 in the Mahiyangana area of the Northern Province.The main entrance to the university is through the Galaha road. Only the Faculty of Engineering is located on one side of the Mahaweli River, while all the other faculties are situated on the opposite side of the river. These faculties are connected by the Akbar bridge.The only railway station belonging to the university, 'Sarasavi Uyana' railway station, is located within the University of Peradeniya. The 'Yakada Bridge' is another bridge located within the university that crosses the railway line. Daily shuttle bus services operate from Kandy to Galaha junction and from Kandy to the university.
