St. Basil's Cathedral, Russia
St. Basil's is located on the Red Square in Moscow. Although many people know this as St. Basil's Cathedral, , it has a rather longer name-The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin by the Moat. The name refers to a "holy fool" named Basil the Blessed. The cathedral was ordered by Ivan the Terrible to mark the 1552 capture of Kazan from Mongolian forces. It was built from 1555 to 1560. It is most popular for it's colorful, onion like domes. |
