The Resurrection

This year, 2024, Easter Sunday is on March 31st.
You may not know why we celebrate Easter, you may have never celebrated it, or even heard of it.
Easter should be the happiest holiday of all, but if you don't know the reasons behind it, it can be completely overlooked.
Over the next few days, I will write about Easter including
-the true story behind it (plus Bible references so you can read more for yourself)
-why it is important
-and proof for the Resurrection of Jesus!
Please read this- it is the foundation of the Christian Faith!

The tomb is empty!
The Good Friday Story is when Jesus was crucified by the Jews and Romans. He went into Hell for 3 days. The Devil thought he'd defeated God, but he was wrong.
Mark 15:21–41

And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!” So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

(Then he was put in a tomb with a very heavy stone rolled across the entrance. These are historical facts- no one can deny that!)
After 3 days here is what happened....
Matthew 28:1–10

Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
What happened?
-Jesus was betrayed by one of his disciples (Read Matthew 26), then arrested in the garden while praying.
-Jesus was tried and sentenced to death, not because he did anything wrong, but because the people wanted him to be killed (Matthew 27)
-He was killed on the cross, fulfilling many prophecies (Psalms 22: 17, Psalms 34: 20, Zachariah 12:10)
-He was buried
-He rose on the third day, defeating death and the devil, so everyone who believes may have life.
-Later, he ascended into heaven, where he lives with his Father and always will.
1 Corinthians 15:4 "And that he was buried, and that he was raised, in accordance with the scripture"

The day he rose again is called Easter!
This all was God's perfect plan to save his people.
Why does it even matter that Jesus rose from the dead?
1 Corinthians 15: 15-19 talks about this.
It says that if Jesus didn't raise from the dead, are faith is useless.
Essentially, there would be no Christian faith if he didn't.
Jesus would be no different than Muhammad, Buddha, Joseph Smith and so many others- a false prophet.
If you want to be a Christian, you must take the resurrection as a fact- not a legion, not a figurative metaphor.
PROOF OF THE RESURRECTION
1 Corinthians 15 also gives proof- in verses 3-8.
Paul, the author, lists off hundreds of people who saw him after his death. These people were mostly still alive when it was written and None of them denied it. Rather, many of them died for their faith. If it was all made up- why would hundreds of Christians (who supposedly saw Jesus) die horrific deaths for their faith?
The Jewish leaders would have looked for the body- did they find it? No! And if they found one little piece of evidence against the resurrection- they had the power to tell everyone about it.
Another theory, called the "swoon theory" says Jesus didn't really die, just faint. This is impossible! Roman executioners were very good at their job. Do a little research about them and you will be convinced. He was beaten, whipped, and then suffocated.
Other people say Jesus didn't even go to the cross- one of his followers did. But the pharisees (Jewish leaders) and others who prosecuted him and witnessed his death had seen him many times. They had watched and talked to him. It is impossible they would all mistake him for someone else.

Why is it important to know this Biblical evidence for Christ?
A) Like I said, you must believe wholeheartedly in this to be a Christian. If you have doubts, this evidence should give you confidence in your faith.
B) Others will need the evidence. When you try to tell someone about the resurrection they will always say "Well, how do you know it is true?"
C) It is true evidence. You can easily find "evidence" for Christ by recently found "books of the Bible", conspiracy theories, and suspicious historical evidence. This evidence is simple, easy to find (right in the Bible), logical and should be enough to convince someone with a teachable heart (sadly, some will just never learn).
Thank you for reading and Happy Easter!
