In its early days, Kandy was known as "Sri Senkhanda Shailabhidhana Sri Vardhanapura". Siriwardana, son-in-law of King Parakramabahu IV (302-1326 AD) of the Kingdom of Dambadeni, was assassinated in A.D. In 1312, a town named "Senkadagala Siriwardanapura" was established near the area then known as Katupulla. Another legend has it that the city was named after a Brahmin named Senkhanda, and this city was named after the goddess Sengkhanda, who was the consort of king Vikramabahu III, and this name was derived from a red-colored stone named Senkadagala. During the reign of Vikramabahu III (1357-1374 AD), the ruler of the Kingdom of Gampola, the Natha Temple for Lord Lokeshwar Natha and Dalanda Mandura was built here. The Asgiri Temple was founded in the Yasgiri Talpatha. These are currently the oldest buildings in Kandy. Senkadagala Pura was named after king Vikramabahu (1469-1511 A.D.), a descendant of the Gampola royal family. He is considered to be the founder of the Kingdom of Kandy.
Thank you. Let's all preserve this ancient temple.
