Introduction:

Basically speaking, MDZS (Mo Dao Zu Shi) by MXTX (Mo Xiang Tong Xiu) includes a world where people cultivate, and through endeavors, those may become immortals.
In this world, two main kind of energy exist: Resentment energy and spiritual energy. Cultivators are meant to dissipate resentment energy using the spiritual energy they produce from their golden cores, kinda like what Marvel superheroes do.

Cultivators are distinguished into different sects of different regions. The four main sects are the Lan Sect from Gusu, the Jiang Sect from Yunmeng, the Nie Sect from Qinghe, and lastly, the Jin Sect of Lanling.
Lan Wangji, our main character, is from the Lan sect, their motto being "Righteous".
Wei Wuxian, another main character, is from the Jiang sect, their motto being "attempt the impossible".
Mo Dao Zu Shi involves these two idiots pining each other from the beginning, with our quiet boy (victim) hiding from the sunshiny other (suspect) boy's attempts of 'befriending'.

As dumb and young as teenagers were, they had no idea what this feeling was, until the world dumped tons of political baggage, separating our lovesick fools to smoother them more with emotional damage from their loved ones.
By reading Mo dao Zu Shi, you shall read into the journey of our pinetrees separating because of worldly matters then rejoining to get revenge through PDA.

Main character: Lan Wangji

Sobriquet: Hanguang-jun ("Bringer of light")
Courtesy name: Lan Wangji
("free of worldly concerns")
Birthname: Lan Zhan ("Clear" or "Deep")

Weapon: a sword, named Bichen
("shunning wordly affairs")
Instructmental weapon: a Guqin, named Wangji

Father: refered as Qingheng-jun
Mother: refered as Madam Lan (Lan-furen)

Lan Wangji's perfection as a cultivator is outranked by none! Shunning petty politics and such, he appears wherever there is chaos to help people in danger, earning him his sobriquet which spreads far and wide.

Hanguang-jun, not only strong, is also graceful and handsome, some might see it as beautiful instead, but it is pleasing to the eyes nonetheless. His beauty is uncharred, if not for Lan Wangji's theorically-permanent emotionless expression and his constant fuss about his GusuLan Sect's rules. While white clothes suit our boy very much, a certain someone thinks the robes look like mourning clothes.
Main character: Wei Wuxian

Sobriquet: Yiling Patriarch
Courtesy name: Wei Wuxian ("Having no envy")
Birthname: Wei Ying ("Infant")

Weapon: a sword, named Suibian ("Whatever");
Yin Tiger Tally
Instrucmental weapon: a dizi, named Chenqing (Reference to a line in a collection of poems, Chu Ci, by famous poet Qu Yuan)

Father: Wei Changze
Mother: Cangse-Sanren

Wei Wuxian was the feared Yiling Patriarch (and an oblivious, stupid genius). Recarnated, instead of using spiritual energy, Wei Wuxian harness resentment energy. Jeez, that sounds evil, but he used it for good while the whole world turned on him, and no spoilers! In his first life, Wei Wuxian, in Lan Wangji's dictionary, was the obnoxious but lovely troublemaker-rulebreaker!

None was an exception to his teasing and flirtatious nature, except the scariest ones out there such as Old Man Lan, Madam Yu and dogs. He was oblivious about both his crush on Lan Wangji and Lan Wangji's on him despite following Lan Qiren's one Jade around like a man-made tail! Even Jiang Yanli knew about Wei Wuxian's crush despite being miles away!
