Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)
Adam's Peak or the mountain of Sri Pada is an important pilgrim site, one of the rare places that people of four major religions in the world worship.
It is well known as Sri Pada, 'Sacred footprint' Buddhists believe that is the footprint of the Buddha, in Hindu tradition that of Shiva and in Islamic and Christian tradition that of Adam. It is also referred as Samanalakanda - ' Butterfly Mountain', in Tamil as Sivanolipatha Malai. It is a tall conical mountain situated in the Rathnapura district with a height of 7,360 feet (2,243 Meters). The peak pilgrimage season is in April, and the goal is to be a top of the mountain at sunrise. Climbing at night can be remarkable experience, with the lights of the path leading up and into the stars overhead. There are rest stops along the way. The mountain is most often scaled from December to May. During other months it is hard to climb the mountain due to very heavy rain, extreme wind, and thick mist. According to the Sri Lanka's great chronicle (a written record of historical events), Mahawasama, Buddha visited Sri Lanka three times. It is said that Buddha left hid footprint on the rock at top of the mountain when he visited this place at the invitation of the Deity Sama (Saman Dewiya). |
