The poson festival 2025

Poson, also known as Poson Poya, is a significant Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka that commemorates the introduction of Buddhism to the island in the 3rd century BC. It is celebrated on the full moon day of June, making it one of the most important religious observances in the country, second only to Vesak.

The festival is centered around Mihintale, where Arahat Mahinda, the son of Indian Emperor Ashoka, preached Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa. Thousands of pilgrims visit Mihintale and Anuradhapura, engaging in religious activities such as meditation, prayers, and offerings. The celebrations also include illuminated pandols, lanterns, and free food stalls (dansals), creating a vibrant and spiritual atmosphere.

During Poson, the sale of meat and alcohol is often prohibited in certain areas to maintain the sanctity of the occasion. It is a time for reflection, generosity, and devotion, bringing communities together in celebration of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage.

According to historical records, this city was first built by King Vikramabahu (1357–1374). He constructed it in the area called Watapuluwa, located north of the current city, and named it Senkadagalapura. There is no definitive reason found yet for the name Senkadagalapura, although historians suggest that it may be named after a stone worker named Senkanda who lived in a nearby cave.

Alternatively, there is another theory that it could be named either after the King’s own name, Senkanda, or after a colorful rock known as Senkadagala.
