According to an ancient Sri Lankan genealogy, the Kulavamsa, the area was a large forest, which later turned into a mountain due to storms and landslides and was chosen by King Kashyapa for his new capital. He built his palace on top of this rock and decorated its sides with colorful murals. On a small plateau about halfway up this rock, he built a gate in the form of a giant lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure; Sinhagiri , Lion Rock . After the king's death, the capital and the king's palace were abandoned. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. [3] Sigiriya is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the best-preserved examples of old urban planning.
