Sinharaja Rain Forest
Sinharaja is a rainforest. It borders Ratnapura and Galle. It can be accessed from Pitadeniya, Kudawa and Morningside. This is a national park spread over 11,250 hectares. It has also been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.This Sinharaja also means "burning of the lions". Due to the dense forest cover, wild animals cannot be seen here like in dry zone parks like Yala. The last three wet zone elephants were seen in Sinharaja. Twenty species of animals have been identified in Sri Lanka. Among them, the red-bellied toad, the Sri Lankan bat-tailed cuckoo, and the Sri Lankan brown-bellied toad can be seen. There are many animals that are endemic to the Morningside area of Sinharaja and can only be seen there. Among them, lizards and hyenas are the most common. The Yoda fern species here is endemic to Sinharaja. We must protect this. |
