The Australia Women's National Basketball Team (nicknamed The Opals) is the women's National Basketball team for Australia. They won Gold at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006 defeating New Zealand's Tall Ferns in the final match with a score of 77-39. They then followed it up with a gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship for Women, beating Russia 91-74. The Opals became the first non-American team since Soviet Union in 1983 to become world champions with their victory over the Russians. They then won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics losing to America,92-65.


Suzy Batkovic was born on the 17th of December, 1980 (Age: 28) and was born in Lambton, Australia. Plays center and her Height listed as 6-foot-4 (194 cms). Her Weight listed as 203 pounds (92.1 kgs). Suffered dislocated thumb in exhibition game on April 21 versus Cuba during first action with national team in three years. Played her only WNBA season in 2005 with fellow Australian Lauren Jackson for the Seattle Storm, and averaged 6.9 points in 29 games as a reserve. Previous Australian national team experience came in 2002 World Championships (bronze medal) and 2004 Athens Olympics (silver medal). Made her breakthrough in Europe in 2002 when she joined French team Valenciennes, where she spent two seasons, winning the EuroLeague Women title in 2004. Moved to Spain and Ros Casares Valencia for the 2004-2005 season and Russia and Ekaterinburg in 2005-2006. In the 2002 Australian Women's League (WNBL), she averaged 20 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.
